At which point it feels Gomorrah may be about to pivot into an Eighties action movie (it would not come as a shock were Arnold Schwarzenegger to sprint into the frame delivering pithy one-liners). With the Savastanos regarded as in retreat, rivalry with Pastore spills over into a mass firefight in the courtyard of a flat complex. Aniello is an old-school mobster, whose grand mansion could not be more different from the semi-collapsed high-rise Genny calls home. Genny must also address tensions with another godfather, Don Aniello Pastore (Nello Mascia) and his creepy nephew, 'O Diplomato (Andrea Di Maria).
Alas, plans to execute the Levantes at a funeral in Rome go amiss when Genny's goons are hoodwinked into walking into a police ambush, leaving the tantalising question of who in their ranks tipped off the Levantes about their hit job. He is, however, still at work attempting to eliminate the rival Levante family. He knows, too, when to keep a low profile and, having just wiped out several mortal enemies, is currently hiding in a bunker, separated from wife Azzurra and son Pietro. However, five years of double-crossing and brutal reprisals have turned him into a ruthless operator. He was introduced as a pampered princeling and a family man who wanted to forge a life outside of crime. Genny has had a Michael Corleone-esque arc throughout Gomorrah (which draws on Roberto Saviano’s 2006 exposé of the Neapolitan “Camorra” mafia and the criminal tentacles which extend into every face of life in the city). And the individual doing the lion's share of the firing is thinking man’s thug Gennaro “Genny” Savastano (Salvatore Esposito), who has inherited from his bloodthirsty father the title of head of the Savastano crime family. Several bangs in fact – most of them occurring in a big shoot-out in the first episode.
That remains the case in season five even as the pedal-to-the-floor pace leaves little room for admiring the baroque scenery.Īgainst the distinctive backdrop of decaying tenements sweltering in the gauzy Mediterranean light, Gomorrah returns with a bang.
That combination of well-worn mobster cliches and Naples’s haunting otherness makes for a unique thriller. Obviously Gomorrah is a very different beast: it features rather more bazooka-toting hitmen than Ferrante managed to fit into her books, for one thing.Īnd yet, as with Ferrante’s writing, much of its dramatic power flows from the exotic glamour of Naples, a city that, even to other Italians, feels a place apart. The crumbling outskirts of Italy’s third largest city is famously also the setting of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels. The series, which begins its fifth and final season on Sky Atlantic, is a stone-cold slab of gangster noir set amid the crumbling tower blocks of modern Naples and which brims with terse dialogue, switchblade betrayals and stylish hyper-violence.
Gomorrah’s A-list fan club was recently revealed to include David Bowie, Ed Sheeran, Diego Maradona and Sofia Coppola (also the best ever theoretical lineup for an episode of Celebrity Come Dine With Me).
